The Problem

Why Brands Are Migrating From Magento to Shopify

100

Of thousands of stores globally yet the platform's operational burden is pushing D2C brands toward Shopify at a steady pace. The shift is not about features alone. It is about what running Magento costs in hosting bills, developer hours, and security exposure every month. Brands that migrated through our 40-plus Shopify migration projects consistently raise the same three concerns.

01

The True Cost of Running Magento Hosting, Patches, Security

Mid-size Magento 2
Significant/month
Shopify

₹0extra
Cloud hostingSSLCDNPCI DSS complianceSecurity patches

Magento requires self-hosted infrastructure, which means the store owner manages cloud hosting, SSL certificates, CDN configuration, and PCI DSS compliance separately. A mid-size Magento 2 store carries meaningful ongoing infrastructure costs for all of this costs that Shopify folds into its monthly subscription fee. On top of hosting, security patches require a qualified Magento developer to apply and test against every active extension before the update can go live. Skipping even one patch leaves the store exposed to known vulnerabilities that automated scanners find quickly. Shopify eliminates this entire layer with built-in hosting, automatic security updates, and native PCI Level 1 compliance at no additional cost.

02

Magento 1 End-of-Life The Urgency for M1 Stores

Supported June 2020End-of-life Unpatched
6+ years with no security patches,
PHP updates or PCI support

Magento 1 reached official end-of-life in June 2020. Adobe stopped releasing security patches, PHP compatibility updates, and PCI compliance support on that date. Any store still running Magento 1 today operates on an unsupported platform where every new browser update, payment gateway requirement, or data-protection regulation creates an unpatched risk. Payment processors are increasingly flagging M1 stores during compliance reviews. If your store runs Magento 1, migration is not a strategic decision for next quarter. It is an overdue operational fix.

03

Where Magento 2 Still Creates Overhead

Magento 2 resolved many of Magento 1's architecture issues, but the platform still requires significant developer involvement for routine tasks. Adobe releases Magento 2 security patches on a regular schedule, with emergency patches for critical vulnerabilities arriving outside the cycle. Each patch requires a qualified developer to test every active extension for compatibility before the update can go to production. Updating a Magento 2 store from one minor version to the next when many custom extensions are involved — can take several developer days because every extension must be checked before the upgrade proceeds. Even adding a new payment method often means engaging a developer for module configuration rather than installing an app. Shopify's automatic update cycle and its large app marketplace remove this dependency for most store operations.

Data Migration Scope

What Data We Migrate From Magento to Shopify

Every Magento store contains four categories of data that move to Shopify through structured field mapping: products, customers, orders, and SEO metadata. The sections below detail exactly what transfers, how we handle Magento-specific field structures, and what cannot be moved directly. Understanding the limitations upfront removes surprises during the migration.

Categories Collections

Products, Variants & Inventory

3option types max
100variants per product

Over the cap? Restructured in planning — not a go-live surprise.

We migrate every product record including SKU, title, body description, pricing, compare-at price, images with alt text, weight, and inventory quantities. Magento categories map to Shopify collections through a taxonomy document that we finalise with you before any import begins. Magento configurable products convert to Shopify variants, though Shopify enforces a cap of 3 option types and 100 variants per product. Stores with products exceeding this cap, which is common in apparel with size-colour-fabric combinations, are restructured into separate products or handled through a variant-management app during the planning phase, not as a go-live surprise.

Groups Tags

Customers & Order History

Customer records transfer with full name, email address, billing and shipping addresses, account status, and customer tags mapped from Magento customer groups. One limitation applies to every Magento migration: customer passwords cannot be transferred. Magento and Shopify use different encryption methods, so every customer account requires a one-time password reset after migration. We configure Shopify's automatic invite flow to trigger a branded password-reset email the first time each customer attempts to log in, so the process is invisible to most returning buyers.

Imported orders are read-only. Order history migrates with order ID, line items, quantities, totals, and fulfilment status. Imported orders appear in Shopify's admin for reference and customer-service lookup, but they are read-only. Refunds, edits, or re-fulfilment actions cannot be performed on imported orders within Shopify. Active orders that require ongoing fulfilment are flagged and managed through a parallel process during the cutover window.

Meta 1:1

SEO Metadata, CMS Pages & Blog Content

Meta titles, meta descriptions, and URL handles transfer to Shopify with 1:1 field mapping. CMS pages built in Magento's static block editor are recreated as Shopify pages with their content intact. Blog posts migrate with title, body, featured image, publication date, and author attribution. Canonical tags are audited during the URL mapping phase to make sure Magento's duplicate URLs, particularly those generated by layered navigation, are not carried over as duplicate pages on Shopify.

Honest limits

What Cannot Be Transferred Directly

Five categories of Magento data do not transfer to Shopify through any migration tool or direct import:

  1. 1. Customer passwords

Encryption mismatch between platforms, handled through automatic password-reset flow.

    Password-reset flow
  2. 2. Custom Magento extensions and modules

Each must be replaced with a Shopify app equivalent or rebuilt as custom functionality. See how we handle extensions below →

    App or custom build
  3. 3. Complex catalog price rules and tier pricing logic

Magento's promotion engine is architecturally different from Shopify's discount system. Rules must be rebuilt using Shopify Scripts on Plus or discount apps.

    Scripts or discount apps
  4. 4. Layered navigation configuration

Magento's faceted filtering setup does not export. Collection filtering in Shopify is configured fresh using Shopify's native filters or a filtering app.

    Native filters or app
  5. 5. Admin roles and ACL permissions

Magento's granular admin permission system has no Shopify equivalent. Shopify staff accounts use a different permission model that we configure during the theme-build phase.

    Staff accounts setup

None of these are blockers. Each has a documented resolution path that we scope during Phase 1 of every migration.

Our Process

How We Migrate Your Magento Store to Shopify

Our migration runs in 4 phases in a fixed sequence: audit, staged data migration, theme build, and go-live. The phases overlap where possible to compress timelines, but the data import follows a strict dependency order. Products must import before customers, and customers before orders, because Shopify's data model links these records through internal IDs assigned at import time.

1 Audit

Store Audit, Data Mapping and Backup

Phase 1 produces a complete inventory of what your Magento store contains and what the Shopify destination needs. We document total SKU count, product variant structures, customer volume, order history depth, and every active Magento extension with its version number. URL structures are mapped, including Magento's /catalog/product/view/id/ paths, .html suffixes, and any custom URL rewrites, to build the redirect document that Phase 4 deploys. A full Magento database backup is taken before any migration work begins. This backup is stored on an encrypted staging environment with no third-party access. All staging data is handled under the same security protocol and removed after migration is complete. An NDA covering data handling is signed before work begins on every project.

Full DB backup Encrypted staging Removed post-migration NDA day one
2 Data

Staged Data Migration and Field Matching

Data moves to a Shopify development store, not your live store, in the fixed sequence: products first, then customers, then orders. Each record type has a field-matching document that maps every Magento database field to its Shopify equivalent. For example, Magento's catalog_product_entity_varchar title field maps to Shopify's product.title. Variant restructuring happens here: Magento configurable products with attributes exceeding Shopify's 3-option limit are split or restructured per the plan from Phase 1. After import, we run validation checks covering SKU count, image integrity, price accuracy, and customer record completeness, and flag any gaps before proceeding.

  • Image integrity
  • Price accuracy
  • Customer completeness
3 Theme

Theme Build and Conversion Setup

While data migration runs, we build the Shopify storefront in parallel. This is not a template installation. It is a storefront built with a homepage designed for brand storytelling, product pages structured for Meta and Google Ads traffic, and collection pages built for browse-to-buy flow. Email sequences including welcome, abandoned cart, order confirmation, and win-back are configured in Klaviyo or Shopify Email.

Our D2C Shopify development approach
4 Go-Live

QA, Redirects and Go-Live

Quality assurance covers test orders across every payment method, shipping-rate verification, discount-code testing, mobile responsiveness checks, and a full broken-link crawl. The 301 redirect map built in Phase 1 is deployed, covering every indexed Magento URL. DNS is switched during a low-traffic window, typically early morning IST, and the Magento store is placed behind a maintenance redirect pointing to the new Shopify domain. We monitor traffic, redirects, and checkout completion for 48 hours after launch and remain available for any issues that surface in the first week.

Extensions & Integrations

Handling Custom Extensions and Integrations

Custom extensions are the single largest cost and complexity variable in any Magento migration. A typical Magento 2 store carries many active extensions covering everything from shipping rules to advanced product customisation. None of these transfer to Shopify. Every extension must be audited, mapped to a Shopify equivalent, or flagged for custom rebuild.

15–30 extensions on a typical Magento 2 store 0 transfer to Shopify as-is

Replacing Magento Extensions With Shopify Apps

We start by inventorying every active extension in your Magento admin, noting the extension name, vendor, version, and the specific store function it serves. Each extension falls into one of three paths:

Majority of cases

Direct Shopify App Store replacement

Shipping calculators, review widgets, upsell tools

Shopify Plus

Shopify Function or Script replacement

Checkout and discount logic

Custom

Custom API-based integration

Anything without a native equivalent

Common extension categories we map in every Magento migration
Multi-carrier shipping rulesProduct customiser / build-your-ownAdvanced layered search and filteringLoyalty and reward pointsSubscriptions and recurring orders

Stores with many active extensions should expect extension mapping to be a substantial part of total migration effort. Enterprise Magento stores with extensive custom modules may require Shopify Plus for its checkout extensibility, higher API limits, and Shopify Functions →

ERP, CRM and Payment Gateway Re-Integration

ERP connections including NetSuite, SAP Business One, Tally, and Zoho Inventory that were built as Magento modules must be rescoped for Shopify's API architecture. This is not a plug-and-play swap. Each integration requires reviewing the data flow for inventory sync, order push, and customer sync, rebuilding the connection through Shopify's Admin API or a middleware tool, and testing the round-trip under real transaction volume. CRM integrations including Zoho CRM, HubSpot, and GoHighLevel follow the same audit-and-rebuild path. Payment gateways transition to Shopify Payments as the default processor, with Razorpay, Stripe, or PayPal configured as alternatives based on your market requirements. Legacy gateway configurations that relied on Magento's custom payment module are replaced with Shopify's payment provider API integration.

SEO Migration

SEO Safe Migration: Protecting Rankings Through the Switch

Organic traffic loss is the most common problem store owners face after a Magento migration, and Magento stores face a higher redirect complexity than most platforms because of how Magento handles URLs. A standard Magento store generates three distinct URL patterns: /catalog/product/view/id/123 parameter-based URLs, /product-name.html rewritten URLs, and layered-navigation URLs with filter parameters. Each pattern needs its own redirect rule to prevent 404 errors after the switch.

Pattern 1 · Parameter-based /catalog/product/view/id/123 301 mapped 1:1 /products/product-name
Pattern 2 · Rewritten .html /product-name.html 301 .html stripped /products/product-name
Pattern 3 · Layered navigation /shoes.html?color=red&size=10 301 consolidated /collections/shoes

301 Redirect Architecture for Magento URL Structures

Sitemap export
Full live crawl TBP
Indexed pagesNon-indexed URLsOrphaned categoriesParameter URLs

We build the redirect map by crawling your live Magento store, not by exporting the sitemap. A sitemap-based approach misses non-indexed URLs, orphaned category pages, and the parameter-based URLs that Magento generates internally. All of these still receive traffic from backlinks, bookmarks, and cached search results. The crawl captures every URL returning a 200 status code, and each is mapped 1:1 to its Shopify equivalent. Magento's .html suffixes are stripped during mapping since Shopify does not use file extensions in URLs. Layered-navigation URLs are mapped to the primary collection URL and the duplicates are consolidated rather than redirected individually to avoid redirect bloat.

URL Mapping, Canonicals and Sitemap Resubmission

Before migration, we audit Magento's canonical tag setup. Magento is known for generating duplicate URLs through layered navigation, store views, and session-parameter appending, and not all Magento installations handle canonical tags correctly. Any canonical inconsistencies are resolved in the redirect map so that Shopify inherits clean, de-duplicated URL structures from launch. After go-live, the new Shopify sitemap is submitted to Google Search Console within the first hour, the old sitemap is removed, and we monitor index coverage, crawl errors, and organic traffic daily for 30 to 90 days. Any ranking change is investigated and addressed within 24 hours.

Platform Fit

Is Migrating From Magento to Shopify Right for You?

Not every Magento store needs to move right away. Here is an honest breakdown.

Signs you should migrate soon
  • Your store still runs on Magento 1. It has had no security patches since June 2020 and payment processors are flagging this during compliance checks.
  • You run 15 or more custom extensions and updating anything now takes weeks of developer time.
  • Hosting, server management, and compliance costs keep rising every quarter.
  • Your team cannot add a simple feature without hiring a Magento developer.
Fix Magento first, not migrate
  • Your store is slow but running on weak shared hosting. Upgrading hosting or caching may solve this without a full migration.
  • You are only missing one payment method or shipping option. Check the Magento extension marketplace first, a migration may not be needed yet.
Signs you can stay on Magento 2 for now
  • Your store is stable, your team knows Magento well, and your extensions are all current and supported.
  • You rely on deep custom catalog price rules or B2B logic that took years to build and still works fine.
  • Your traffic and order volume are low enough that the operational cost is not yet a real problem.

If your store runs Magento 1, or your extension list has grown past what your team can maintain, the case for migrating now is strong. If only hosting speed or one missing feature is the issue, fix that first before spending on a full migration.

Timeline and Investment

Migration Timeline and Cost

Typical Project Timelines

Standard D2C storeUnder 500 SKUs, no custom extensions, standard theme
1 to 2 weeks
Mid-size store500 to 5,000 SKUs, several extensions, some ERP or CRM connections
4 to 8 weeks
Enterprise / complex store5,000+ SKUs, many extensions, heavy ERP integration, multi-currency, B2B
10 to 16 weeks

These timelines include data migration, theme build, extension mapping, redirect deployment, QA, and go-live. The standard D2C timeline is based on actual TBP project data. Mid-size and enterprise ranges are industry benchmarks based on comparable Magento migrations. Your actual timeline is scoped during the Phase 1 audit after we review your store's complexity.

What Drives Migration Cost

Migration cost is determined by five variables, each scoped during the Phase 1 audit:

01

SKU and data volume

A 200-SKU store with 5,000 customers migrates faster and at lower cost than a 10,000-SKU catalog with 100,000 customer records. Data volume directly affects import time, validation effort, and the likelihood of edge cases in field mapping.

02

Number of custom extensions

Every Magento extension that does not have a direct Shopify App Store equivalent requires either a custom Shopify Function build or an API-based integration. The more extensions a store carries, the more mapping and rebuilding work is involved.

03

ERP, CRM, and third-party integrations

Each integration connection, whether NetSuite, SAP, Tally, Zoho, GoHighLevel, or custom webhooks, adds a scoping, rebuilding, and testing cycle to the project. Stores with multiple active integrations typically fall into the enterprise timeline.

04

Theme complexity

A migration to a customised Shopify theme with unique section layouts, custom product-page features, or multi-region support takes longer than a migration that uses an optimised version of Dawn or a premium theme with minor adjustments.

05

Data cleanup required

Magento stores that have operated for several years often carry duplicate products, orphaned categories, outdated customer records, and inconsistent SKU formatting. Cleaning this data before migration adds time but prevents import problems that are harder to fix after go-live.

Aquarium & aquatic supplies brand MagentoShopify
800+ products migrated across 40+ specialised categories

AQUAStore.in migrated from Magento to Shopify with a catalogue of 800+ products across 40+ specialised categories. The Fishes category alone contained more than 500 listings. Live Plants carried more than 150. The store also had dedicated sections for Betta, Discus, Tetra, Shrimps, Snails, Treatments, and multiple aquatic plant categories, each requiring its own Shopify collection structure with proper navigation. We restructured Magento's category hierarchy into Shopify collections, mapped all product data across every aquarium category, built the full 301 redirect architecture covering every Magento URL, and validated the complete catalogue on the Shopify storefront. AQUAStore is a good example of why large Magento migrations should not be treated as a simple export and import. When a store has hundreds of products and dozens of specialised categories, the quality of the migration depends on how well the catalogue structure is translated into Shopify's product and collection architecture and not just whether the data arrived.

"Switching from Magento to Shopify removed a constant source of technical overhead. The catalogue is now easier to manage and we are not dependent on a developer for routine updates."

Why D2C Brands Choose The Bright Preneur for Magento Migration

40+store migrations

40+ Shopify Migrations Across Verticals

We have completed 40-plus store migrations across fashion, jewellery, aquarium, luxury, home decor, food, and health verticals. Each migration follows the same 4-phase process documented above, adapted to the source platform's specific data structures and limitations. Magento migrations receive dedicated attention to extension auditing, variant-cap restructuring, and the complex redirect architecture that Magento's URL system demands, work that data-only migration tools do not cover.

Conversion-First Launch, Not Just Data Transfer

Most migration agencies deliver a store that looks like your old store on a new platform. We deliver a store designed to convert from launch. That means homepage layouts built for brand storytelling, product pages structured for Meta and Google Ads landing-page quality scores, collection pages optimised for browse-to-buy conversion, and email automation including abandoned cart, welcome series, post-purchase, and win-back configured before launch, not as a follow-up project that never ships. Every Magento migration includes an NDA signed before work begins, full code ownership transferred to you at launch, direct Slack and WhatsApp access to your project manager, and 12 months of post-launch technical support at no additional cost.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Question not here? Ask us directly.

WhatsApp us
01How long does a Magento to Shopify migration take?

A standard D2C store with under 500 SKUs and no custom extensions migrates in 1 to 2 weeks. Mid-size stores with extensions and integrations typically take 4 to 8 weeks. Enterprise stores with heavy ERP connections, B2B functionality, and many extensions can take 10 to 16 weeks. Timeline is scoped during our Phase 1 audit after we review your store's complexity.

02Will my customers need to reset their passwords?

Yes. Magento and Shopify use different password encryption methods, so customer passwords cannot be transferred between platforms. We configure Shopify's account-invite flow to send a branded password-reset email the first time each customer attempts to log in. Most customers complete the reset without contacting support.

03Can you migrate my custom Magento extensions?

Magento extensions do not transfer directly to Shopify. We audit every active extension, map each to a Shopify App Store replacement where one exists, and scope custom builds or API integrations for anything without a native equivalent.

04Do you handle Magento 1 stores?

Yes. Magento 1 has been end-of-life since June 2020 with no security patches or compliance updates from Adobe. We treat M1 stores as priority migration projects given the security exposure.

05What happens to my SEO rankings during migration?

We build a crawl-based 301 redirect map covering every indexed Magento URL, including parameter-based URLs and .html suffix pages that sitemap exports miss. Canonical tags are audited, the new sitemap is submitted to Google Search Console within the first hour of go-live, and we monitor organic traffic daily for 30 to 90 days. When redirect architecture is built correctly, ranking disruption is minimal and temporary.

06What is the difference between Shopify and Shopify Plus for a migrated store?

Standard Shopify handles the majority of D2C migrations. Shopify Plus is required when the store needs checkout customisation through Shopify Functions, B2B wholesale features, higher API rate limits for heavy ERP sync, or multi-currency with market-specific pricing. Complex Magento stores with enterprise features are the most common candidates for Plus. Compare Shopify and Shopify Plus.

07Is there downtime during the migration?

No. We build and test the entire Shopify store on a development environment while your Magento store continues operating normally. The DNS switch happens during a low-traffic window and typically completes within 15 minutes to a few hours depending on your domain registrar's settings. Customers experience no interruption.

08How do you handle data security during migration?

All data moves through encrypted staging environments. No third-party tools or vendors access your customer or order data. We sign an NDA before any work begins, and all staging data is removed after migration is complete. Your Magento database backup is handled under the same security protocol.
