The Problem

Why D2C Brands Are Moving From WooCommerce to Shopify

Millions

Of WooCommerce stores run on WordPress today, and a growing number of D2C brands are choosing to move. The reason is not that WooCommerce cannot sell products. It can. The problem is that running a WooCommerce store at scale takes up time and effort that should be going toward your brand, marketing, and customers.

The Operational Cost of Running WooCommerce

WooCommerce runs as a WordPress plugin, which means the store owner handles hosting, security patches, PHP updates, plugin compatibility, and server performance on their own. Every major WordPress update can break a plugin your checkout depends on. Every new WooCommerce extension adds one more thing to monitor, test, and maintain. A store running 10 to 20 plugins, which is a typical range for a D2C brand with reviews, subscriptions, and shipping integrations, spends real hours every month on update cycles, testing, and fixing conflicts. That overhead only grows as your catalog and traffic increase.

Where WooCommerce Falls Short for Scaling Brands

Three specific things push D2C brands toward Shopify. First, WooCommerce checkout slows down during traffic spikes because it runs on hosting that you manage yourself. Second, WooCommerce has no built-in multi-currency support. Selling internationally means adding more plugins, each with its own update cycle. Third, WooCommerce themes that work fine with 200 products often slow down at 2,000 because the theme code is not built for large catalogs. Shopify handles all three with managed hosting, built-in multi-currency through Shopify Markets, and a theme system called Online Store 2.0 that is built for scale.

Data Migration Scope

What Data We Migrate From WooCommerce to Shopify

The first question every store owner asks is "will I lose anything?" The answer depends on what is being migrated and what a platform transfer cannot do. We split WooCommerce data into three groups: what transfers completely, what transfers with field mapping, and what cannot be transferred at all.

Products Products

Products, Variants & Media

Every product record moves to Shopify with its title, description, SKU, price, compare-at price, weight, images, tags, and variant structure. WooCommerce variable products map to Shopify variants with up to 100 combinations per product. Product collections are rebuilt from WooCommerce categories and tags.

Custom field data such as material composition, care instructions, or country of origin is mapped to Shopify metafields during the migration planning phase. Image files transfer with their original filenames, and we rebuild alt text where WooCommerce has stored it in the media library.

Users Customers

Customers & Order History

Customer records move with name, email address, billing address, shipping address, phone number, and marketing consent status. Historical orders transfer with order ID, line items, order status, totals, payment method reference, and shipping details. This gives your Shopify store a complete purchase history for every customer.

One limitation: WooCommerce stores passwords in a WordPress-specific format called phpass that Shopify cannot read, so customers will need to reset their passwords on first login. We set up Shopify's automatic account-invite flow to handle this without any manual work from your side.

URLs 301s

SEO Metadata, Blog Content & Redirects

Meta titles, meta descriptions, and URL slugs for every product, collection, and page transfer as part of the migration. Blog posts including their content, featured images, tags, and publish dates move to Shopify's native blog engine.

The most important piece is the 301 redirect map: every WooCommerce URL across products, categories, pages, and blog posts gets a matching redirect to its new Shopify URL, protecting the search rankings and link value your store has built over time.

Honest limits

What Cannot Be Migrated

WooCommerce plugin-specific data such as custom fields built with ACF, WooCommerce Subscriptions renewal schedules, or custom checkout field data does not have a direct Shopify equivalent. We document these gaps during the audit phase and recommend Shopify app alternatives wherever they exist. Saved customer passwords, as explained above, also do not transfer. See our full migration services overview for how we handle platform-specific data across all source platforms.

Platform Fit

Is Migrating to Shopify Right for Your Store?

Not every WooCommerce store needs to move. Here is an honest breakdown.

Signs you should migrate
  • Your hosting costs keep going up and the store still slows down during sales.
  • You depend on 15 or more plugins and some conflict with each other.
  • Your team spends real time every month on plugin updates instead of growth work.
  • Adding a new feature always means hiring a developer because WooCommerce does not support it natively.
Fix WooCommerce first
  • Your site is slow but you are on cheap shared hosting. Upgrade hosting first.
  • Cart abandonment is high. This is usually a checkout design problem, not a platform problem.
  • A missing payment option is often available as a WooCommerce plugin. Check before assuming you need Shopify.
Signs you should stay on WooCommerce
  • Small catalog, low traffic, and the store barely needs maintenance.
  • You depend on deeply custom checkout logic or data rules that only WordPress can handle.
  • Your team knows WordPress well and your roadmap depends on WordPress plugins.

If your team spends more time fixing the store than growing it, and every new feature needs a developer, the case for migrating is strong. If only one of these applies, fix that one thing first before spending money on a migration.

Our Process

How We Migrate Your WooCommerce Store to Shopify

Our migration runs in 4 phases over 1 to 2 weeks for a standard D2C store with up to 5,000 products and 10,000 customer records. Each phase has clear deliverables and a sign-off checkpoint before the next phase starts.

1 Day 1

Store Audit & Data Mapping

The migration starts with a complete review of your WooCommerce store: product count, variant complexity, customer volume, order history, active plugins, custom fields, and current URL structure. We create a field mapping document that shows exactly how every WooCommerce data field maps to its Shopify equivalent and flags fields that need transformation. For example, WooCommerce's /product-category/ URL structure mapping to Shopify's /collections/ format. This audit also covers plugin-to-app mapping: which WooCommerce plugins have direct Shopify app equivalents, which need a workaround, and which gaps need custom development. Common problems come up here such as variant field mismatches between WooCommerce's attribute-based system and Shopify's option-based variant model, coupon and discount format differences, and image alt text that WooCommerce stores in a separate media table rather than on the product record itself.

2 Day 2–5

Staged Migration & Field Matching

Data moves into a Shopify staging store, not directly to your live store. Products, customers, and orders import through a mix of structured CSV exports and Shopify's API, depending on volume and complexity. Every record is field-matched against the mapping document from Phase 1 and validated row by row in the staging store. Data security during this phase follows a strict process. All exports happen over encrypted connections, staging stores are password-protected and accessible only to the migration team, and no data passes through any third-party service. Your data stays between your WooCommerce source and the Shopify destination. NDA coverage is available on request and is standard for enterprise-scale migrations.

Data Security Protocol All exports happen over encrypted connections. Staging stores are password-protected and accessible only to the migration team. No data passes through any third-party service — your data stays between your WooCommerce source and the Shopify destination. NDA coverage is available on request and is standard for enterprise-scale migrations.

3 Day 5–10

Theme Build & Conversion Setup

Migration is not only data transfer. Your Shopify store also needs a storefront that is built to sell. We build the homepage, product pages, and collection pages with clear layout, trust signals above the fold, and checkout that works smoothly. Our D2C Shopify development approach applies here: every page template is built to convert, not just to display products. Email sequences including abandoned cart recovery, order confirmation, and shipping notification are set up or moved from the WooCommerce equivalents.

4 Day 10–14

QA, Redirects & Go-Live

Before the DNS switch, we run a full check: test orders through checkout, payment gateway verification, shipping rate testing, discount code testing, and a complete crawl of the 301 redirect map. Every redirect is tested to confirm it resolves correctly, not just that the rule exists, but that the destination URL returns a working page. The DNS cutover, which is the domain switch to your new Shopify store, happens during a low-traffic window. We monitor the store for 48 hours after launch to catch any redirect gaps, broken links, or data problems that show up only under live traffic.

SEO Migration

SEO Safe Migration: Protecting Your Rankings

Losing rankings after a platform migration is the biggest concern store owners raise, and it is a real risk. A WooCommerce store with years of organic traffic, indexed pages, and backlinks can lose a significant portion of its search rankings within weeks if redirects are handled incorrectly or skipped. Our migration treats SEO protection as a required phase, not something added at the end.

Redirects handled incorrectly −30–60% Migration managed by TBP No meaningful loss

301 Redirect Architecture

Every indexed WooCommerce URL gets a direct 301 redirect to its Shopify equivalent. This covers product pages where /product/slug becomes /products/slug, category pages where /product-category/slug becomes /collections/slug, blog posts where /blog/slug becomes /blogs/news/slug, and all standalone pages. We build the redirect map from a full crawl of your live WooCommerce site combined with Google Search Console data, so the map covers not just currently linked pages but every URL Google has indexed and that carries link value from other websites.

redirects.csv
/product/black-leather-tote/ 301 /products/black-leather-tote
/product-category/handbags/ 301 /collections/handbags
/blog/how-to-care-leather/ 301 /blogs/news/how-to-care-leather
/shop/ 301 /collections/all

URL Structure Mapping & Sitemap Resubmission

WooCommerce and Shopify use completely different URL structures. WooCommerce allows custom permalink patterns such as /shop/, /product-category/, and /product/, while Shopify uses a fixed structure with /products/, /collections/, /pages/, and /blogs/. The redirect map accounts for every pattern in your WooCommerce setup.

After go-live, we resubmit the new Shopify sitemap through Google Search Console, check for duplicate content signals using a canonical tag audit, and run a broken-link crawl within the first 48 hours to catch any redirect gaps that show up under live traffic.

When to do it yourself
  • Your store has fewer than 100 products, no complex variants, minimal search rankings to protect, and you are comfortable building your Shopify theme on your own.
When to hire an expert
  • Your store has a real product catalog, years of organic traffic, customer data that must transfer cleanly, and you need the new Shopify store ready for paid advertising and organic traffic from launch.

DIY migration tools — Matrixify, Cart2Cart, and LitExtension are the three most used options. These tools handle bulk data transfer: products, customers, and orders move from WooCommerce to Shopify through automated field mapping. Where they fall short is everything beyond the data itself.

DIY tools do not build 301 redirects. They do not redesign your store for Shopify's theme system. They do not set up payment gateways or shipping rules, do not configure email flows, and do not run post-migration QA. A store that migrates through a DIY tool arrives on Shopify with its data intact but without a working, conversion-ready storefront.

Agency migration covers the full scope: data transfer, SEO redirect setup, theme design and development, checkout and payment setup, email flow configuration, and post-launch QA. The difference is cost. A professional migration is a project investment, while DIY tools range from free trials to small per-record fees.

What Can Go Wrong

What Can Break During a WooCommerce Migration And How We Prevent It

Moving the data is only part of the job. These are the specific things that commonly go wrong, and how we handle each one before they become a problem.

Product variants over the limit

WooCommerce allows almost unlimited combinations per product. Shopify has a variant limit. If a product goes over it during import, it can split into separate listings, and old orders may point to a product that no longer exists in the same form.

How we prevent it

We check your largest products for this during the audit, before anything is exported.

Tax and shipping rules do not transfer

Tax classes and shipping rules set up in WooCommerce do not move automatically. These need to be rebuilt inside Shopify's settings or a shipping app.

How we prevent it

We rebuild and test this in the staging store, comparing real orders on both platforms so tax and shipping charges match exactly before go-live.

Order confirmation emails landing in spam

Shopify sends order confirmation emails on your behalf after migration. If your domain is not set up to authorise this through SPF and DKIM records, these emails can land in spam.

How we prevent it

We add the required DNS records before launch so every order confirmation reaches the inbox.

Order history losing its context

Imported orders bring over the order details, but reporting inside Shopify treats them as new. Marketing data like which ad or campaign brought the sale does not transfer.

How we prevent it

We keep your WooCommerce store as a read-only archive and set up GA4 as the single source of truth going forward.

Reviews are not part of a standard export

Product reviews are not included in a standard WooCommerce to Shopify data transfer.

How we prevent it

We export them separately from your review plugin and import them through Judge.me or a similar app, mapped to the correct product, so your star ratings are not lost on launch day.

What Affects Migration Cost

Catalog size
Custom functionality
Theme complexity
Data cleanup
SEO redirect mapping
Third-party integrations

Migration cost depends on four things. First, catalog size: a store with 500 products and simple variants takes much less field mapping and QA than a store with 15,000 products across complex variant structures. Second, custom functionality: WooCommerce plugins that need Shopify app equivalents or custom-built alternatives add to the scope. Third, theme complexity: a fully custom Shopify theme requires more work than a configured premium theme. Fourth, data cleanup: WooCommerce stores that have duplicate products, orphaned variants, or messy customer records need pre-migration cleanup before the import can start.

Therapy France

Therapy France migrated from WooCommerce to Shopify. After the data migration, we built a completely new storefront designed around conversion from the start. The homepage, product pages, and collection pages were structured for Meta and Google Ads traffic, not copied from the old design. Product page templates included trust elements, clear pricing, and a smooth add-to-cart layout. Email sequences including abandoned cart, post-purchase, and welcome series were live before the store launched.

The result: nearly Rs 2 lakh in revenue in the first 30 days, from a store that was built to sell from launch. That outcome is not about data migration alone. Tools can move data. The difference is what happens after the data lands: the storefront design, the conversion layout, and the readiness for paid traffic.

Migration Checklist

WooCommerce to Shopify Migration Checklist

Use this checklist before starting your WooCommerce to Shopify migration, whether you migrate on your own or work with an agency.

  1. 01

    Back up your WooCommerce database

Export a full database backup through your hosting panel or a plugin like UpdraftPlus. This is your safety net if anything goes wrong during the migration.

  2. 02

    Export product data as CSV

Use WooCommerce's built-in product export to get a complete CSV with all product fields, variants, and images.

  3. 03

    Export customer and order data

Export customers and historical orders separately. Note any custom fields your store captures beyond the WooCommerce defaults.

  4. 04

    Document your current URL structure

Run a full site crawl using Screaming Frog or Sitebulb and export every indexed URL. This becomes the foundation for your 301 redirect map.

  5. 05

List all active plugins and their functions

For each plugin, check whether a Shopify app equivalent exists, whether the feature is already built into Shopify, or whether custom development is needed.

  6. 06

    Audit your payment gateway setup

Confirm that your current payment gateway such as Razorpay, Stripe, or PayPal is available on Shopify and note any settings that need reconfiguration.

  7. 07

Prepare brand assets for the new theme

Collect your logo files with SVG preferred, brand colours, typography, and any product photography that needs resizing for Shopify's image requirements.

  8. 08

Set up your Shopify account and choose a plan

Create the Shopify store, select the right plan, and configure basic settings for currency, tax, and shipping zones before the migration starts.

  9. 09

Identify custom functionality that needs rebuilding

Any checkout customisations, custom product configurators, or integration-specific workflows need to be scoped before the migration timeline is finalised.

  10. 10

    Plan your DNS cutover window

Choose a low-traffic period for the domain switch and inform your team and any active advertising channels in advance.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Question not here? Ask us directly.

WhatsApp us
01How long does a WooCommerce to Shopify migration take?

A standard D2C store with up to 5,000 products migrates in 1 to 2 weeks including theme build, redirect setup, and QA. Complex stores with 10,000+ products, custom integrations, or Shopify Plus requirements typically take 3 to 6 weeks. The data transfer itself usually takes 2 to 3 days. The remaining time goes toward building a Shopify store that is ready to convert from launch.

02Will I lose my SEO rankings after migrating?

Not if 301 redirects are handled properly. We build a direct redirect map covering every indexed URL on your WooCommerce store, resubmit your sitemap through Google Search Console, and run a post-launch crawl to catch any gaps. Protecting your rankings requires proper redirect setup, which is why SEO safe migration is a dedicated phase in our process, not an optional extra.

03Can you migrate my WooCommerce product reviews to Shopify?

Product reviews stored in WooCommerce's native review system or in plugins like WooCommerce Product Reviews Pro can be exported and imported into Shopify review apps such as Judge.me or Loox. The review text, rating, reviewer name, and date all transfer. Reviews from third-party platforms like Google Reviews or Trustpilot that are embedded on your WooCommerce store are not part of the migration. They stay on those platforms and can be re-embedded on Shopify.

04What happens to my WooCommerce plugins after migration?

WooCommerce plugins do not transfer to Shopify. They are WordPress-specific. During the audit phase, we map every active plugin to its Shopify equivalent: WooCommerce Subscriptions maps to ReCharge or Shopify's native subscriptions, Yoast SEO functionality is handled by Shopify's built-in SEO fields, and shipping plugins map to Shopify Shipping or apps like Shiprocket. Plugins with no direct equivalent are flagged, and we recommend alternatives or custom solutions.

05Do you handle Shopify Plus migrations?

Yes. Stores that need advanced checkout customisation, Shopify Functions, Shopify Flow automation, or enterprise-grade multi-market setups migrate to Shopify Plus with additional scoping for checkout and custom app development.

06Is there downtime during the migration?

The migration happens on a staging store while your WooCommerce store stays live throughout. The only interruption is the DNS cutover, which is the domain switch to your new Shopify store. This typically takes 15 to 60 minutes depending on your domain registrar. We schedule this during a low-traffic window and monitor the transition in real time.

07What about custom WooCommerce functionality built with Advanced Custom Fields (ACF)?

ACF data including custom product fields, custom post type data, and repeater fields does not have a direct match in Shopify's standard product setup. But Shopify metafields and metaobjects can handle most ACF functionality. During the audit, we document every ACF field, decide which ones map to Shopify metafields, and build the metafield definitions before data import. Complex ACF structures like nested repeaters may need custom Shopify section development.

08Can I migrate close to a big sale like Diwali or BBD?

It is best to avoid migrating right before a major sale event. We recommend completing the migration at least a few weeks before any big traffic spike, so the new store is stable and tested before it matters most.

09Can I roll back if something breaks after launch?

Yes, if planned for. We keep your WooCommerce store untouched during the process, so if something critical breaks at launch, we can point your domain back while we fix the issue in staging.

10What if I have 50 or more plugins on WooCommerce?

That usually means several of those plugins are doing something Shopify already handles natively, like basic SEO, caching, or security. During the audit we map out which ones you actually still need.

11Can I keep my existing domain?

Yes. Your domain stays exactly the same. We only update where it points to, so customers never see a different web address.
