The Problem

Why Brands Move From WordPress to Shopify

40%+

WordPress runs over 40% of the web, but brands selling products on WordPress often end up spending more time managing the platform than growing the business. We have seen the same two problems come up again and again across our migrations. Moving to Shopify is not about giving up WordPress as a writing tool. It is about accepting that a CMS built for blogging creates real day to day trouble when it is also asked to run a store that makes money.

01

Plugin Bloat, Hosting Overhead & Security Fatigue

20–30 active plugins on a typical WordPress site — each with its own updates
Your job on WordPress
Server configSSLCDNBackupsDB optimisationLogin hardeningPatch monitoring
On Shopify: hosting, SSL, patches & PCI built in

A normal WordPress site runs 20 to 30 active plugins covering SEO, caching, contact forms, and security. Each plugin brings its own updates, version clashes, and possible security holes, and even one unmaintained plugin can put the whole site at risk. On top of plugins, WordPress needs you to manage your own hosting: server setup, SSL certificate, CDN, backups, and database cleanup are all your job. WordPress is the most attacked CMS in the world, so login protection, file permission checks, and constant patching are not optional. Shopify removes this whole layer. Hosting, SSL, security patches, and PCI compliance come built in at no extra cost.

02

When a CMS Becomes a Bottleneck for Ecommerce Growth

WordPress Shipping plugin Payment gateway plugin Checkout plugin Core: posts · pages · categories Can break on core updates
Shopify Checkout Payments Shipping Products All part of the core platform
₹5–10L monthly revenue — where WordPress-based ecommerce consistently hits a ceiling

WordPress becomes a growth bottleneck the day ecommerce gets added on top of a tool that was built for publishing, posts, pages, categories, and tags. Adding a store through plugins builds a weak setup where checkout depends on third party code the core platform was never made to handle. Payment gateway settings sit inside plugin panels that can break during a WordPress core update. Shipping rules live in another plugin with its own update schedule. Product pages load slowly because many plugins fight for the same page. Brands doing 5 to 10 lakh rupees a month in sales on WordPress almost always hit a point where the platform's overhead costs more than its flexibility helps. Shopify's commerce first setup, where checkout, payments, shipping, and product management are all part of the core platform, removes this problem completely.

Content Migration Scope

What We Migrate From WordPress to Shopify

WordPress content moves to Shopify in four groups: blog posts, static pages, media files, and SEO metadata. The sections below show exactly what moves, how WordPress specific content is handled, and what cannot move directly, because knowing the full scope upfront is what separates a clean migration from one that causes problems after launch.

Centrepiece

Blog Posts, Pages & Media Library

[gallery ids="12,15,18"]Shopify section
/wp-content/uploads/…Shopify CDN

Blog posts are the center of this migration. Every post moves with its title, body content, author name, publish date, categories, tags, and featured image. WordPress formatting, headings, lists, quotes, embedded images, is kept through a cleanup step that removes WordPress shortcodes and rebuilds the formatting in Shopify's editor. Static pages (About, Contact, landing pages, policy pages) move with their full content and page structure intact. The media library, images, PDFs, downloadable files, is moved to Shopify's global CDN, which usually makes image heavy blogs load faster than they did on a single shared hosting server.

Menus Navigation

Navigation, Menus & Site Structure

WordPress supports complex menus: header menus, footer menus, sidebar navigation, mega menus with dropdowns, all built through the Appearance to Menus screen. We note these structures down during Phase 1 and rebuild them as Shopify navigation (main menu, footer menu, and any other menu your theme supports). WordPress sidebar widgets (recent posts, category lists, search bars) do not have a direct Shopify match, so we rebuild their job using Shopify theme sections and blocks that do the same thing in the new design.

Meta 1:1

SEO Metadata, Permalinks & Redirects

Meta titles, meta descriptions, and URL slugs move with a direct one to one match. If your WordPress site uses an SEO plugin like Yoast or Rank Math, we pull the data out of those plugin fields and map it into Shopify's own SEO fields. We check canonical tags during URL mapping to make sure WordPress's duplicate content patterns, especially from date archives, author archives, and tag pages, do not carry over into Shopify. Alt text on every image is kept through the media migration.

Honest limits

What Doesn't Move Directly

Five types of WordPress data need to be rebuilt instead of directly imported:

  1. 1. User passwords

WordPress and Shopify use different password systems. Every customer or member account needs a one time password reset after migration. We set up an automatic branded reset email for this.

    Branded reset email
  2. 2. Plugin settings

Settings from WordPress plugins (Yoast SEO rules, form settings, popup triggers, tracking codes) do not export. Each one is noted down and rebuilt using Shopify's own features or a matching app.

    Native features or apps
  3. 3. Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) and custom post types

ACF data stored in WordPress's database does not map to Shopify's content model. We pull this data out and move it into Shopify metafields, or rebuild it inside page templates during the theme build.

    Metafields or templates
  4. 4. Shortcode dependent content

WordPress shortcodes (like [gallery], [contact-form]) show up as broken plain text on any platform that is not WordPress. We find every shortcode in Phase 1, and rebuild the content using Shopify sections, apps, or plain HTML.

    Sections, apps or HTML
  5. 5. Theme code and widget settings

WordPress PHP theme files and widget settings have no Shopify match. We rebuild the design and features in Shopify's Liquid theme system during Phase 3.

    Rebuilt in Liquid

None of these stop the migration. Each one has a fix planned out during the Phase 1 audit.

Our Process

How We Migrate Your WordPress Site to Shopify

Our WordPress to Shopify migration follows 4 phases in a fixed order: content audit, content export and import, theme build, and go live. We talk about this in content terms on purpose, because WordPress migrations are shaped by how many posts you have, how much media you have, and how complex your permalinks are, not by product count or order history. Every phase below is built around these content specific points.

1 Audit

Content Audit & Migration Plan

Phase 1 gives you a full list of your WordPress site's content and setup. We note down total blog posts, total static pages, media library size (file count and storage size), active plugin list with version numbers, and your exact permalink structure (date based, post name, custom, or numeric). Every shortcode on the site is found and flagged for rebuilding. Menus are mapped out. If WooCommerce is active, that becomes a separate workstream linked to our WooCommerce migration process. The audit gives you a migration plan document listing every piece of content, where it lands on Shopify, and any change needed during import. All data stays on an encrypted staging setup with no outside access, and an NDA is signed before any work starts.

2 Content

Content Export, Cleanup & Import

Content comes out of WordPress using the native WXR (WordPress eXtended RSS) format, which captures posts, pages, comments, categories, tags, and media links. Before we import anything, every exported file goes through a cleanup pass. This is the step that makes WordPress migrations different from any other platform. Shortcodes are stripped out and replaced with clean HTML, or flagged for a Shopify section rebuild. Embedded media paths are updated to point to the new Shopify CDN location. Post formatting is made consistent (heading levels, lists, quote styling) so it renders correctly in Shopify's editor. We import the cleaned content into a Shopify development store in batches, blog posts first, then pages, then media, with a check after each batch confirming the content, images, and formatting are correct.

3 Theme

Theme Build & Conversion Setup

While content migration runs in Phase 2, we build the Shopify storefront alongside it. This is not a default theme install. It is a build made to convert: a homepage designed to tell your brand's story, product pages built to score well on Meta and Google Ads landing pages, and collection pages built for a smooth browse to buy flow. For Sutrikaah, a women's saree brand from Kota, Rajasthan, we moved the full WordPress site to Shopify and built a storefront ready to grow from week one: product pages designed for how people browse ethnic wear, collections split by saree type (silk, cotton, Banarasi, occasion based), and email automation set up before launch.

4 Go-Live

QA, Redirects & Go Live

Quality checks cover content review (every blog post checked for formatting, images, and internal links), test orders across all payment methods, shipping rate checks, discount code testing, and mobile checks. The 301 redirect map built from Phase 1's permalink audit goes live, covering every indexed WordPress URL. DNS switches during a low traffic window, usually early morning IST, and the WordPress site goes offline or shows a maintenance redirect. We watch traffic, redirects, and checkout for 48 hours after launch, and stay on call for issues in the first week. Staging data is deleted within 30 days of go live.

SEO Migration

Protecting Your SEO & Blog Rankings During Migration

Your WordPress blog has built up SEO value over months or years: indexed posts ranking for long tail searches, backlinks pointing to specific articles, and domain authority built through steady publishing. Protecting this during migration is not optional, and WordPress permalink structures make it trickier than a simple find and replace.

WordPress Permalink Mapping to Shopify URLs

WordPress offers 6 permalink formats, and each needs different redirect logic when mapped to Shopify's URL structure:

Date based · most common /2024/01/your-post-slug/ 301 year/month stripped /blogs/news/your-post-slug

The most common pattern on WordPress blogs. Shopify does not support date based URL paths — all blog posts live under /blogs/news/your-post-slug (or whichever blog handle you set up). Every date based URL must redirect to the flat Shopify path, with the year and month removed entirely.

Post name /your-post-slug/ 301 prefix added /blogs/blog-handle/your-post-slug

Maps more cleanly but still needs a path change: WordPress serves posts at the root level, while Shopify nests them under /blogs/blog-handle/.

Numeric / parameter · trickiest /?p=123 301 database lookup /blogs/news/matching-post

These are WordPress's internal post IDs shown as URLs. Search engines and old backlinks may point to these. Each one has to be matched to its Shopify URL by checking the WordPress database.

Category based /category/fashion/your-post-slug/ 301 category + post path tag page or collection

Need both the category path and the post path to redirect correctly. WordPress category archives (/category/fashion/) map to Shopify blog tag pages or collection pages, depending on whether the category served a content or store function.

301 Redirects, Sitemap Resubmission & Post Launch Monitoring

Full live crawl TBP
Indexed pagesNon-indexed pagesDrafts with backlinksParameter URLs

We build the redirect map by crawling your live WordPress site, not by using the sitemap alone. A sitemap only approach misses pages that are not indexed, draft URLs that picked up backlinks, and parameter based URLs that WordPress creates on its own. The crawl catches every URL returning a 200 status, and each one is matched one to one with its Shopify equivalent. After go live, the new Shopify sitemap is submitted to Google Search Console within the first hour. If your domain is also changing (say, moving off a .wordpress.com subdomain to your own domain), we use Google's Change of Address tool to flag the move. We also recheck that analytics and tracking (Google Analytics, Meta Pixel) are firing correctly on the new site, since a missed tracking tag is one of the most common things that quietly breaks during a platform move. Organic traffic, crawl errors, and index coverage are checked daily for 30 to 60 days, and any ranking change is looked into within 24 hours.

Timeline & Investment

Migration Timeline & Investment

Typical Project Timelines

Small siteUnder 100 posts, few plugins, standard theme
1–2 weeks
Medium site100 to 500 posts, some plugins, custom menus
1–2 weeks
Large / content heavy site500+ posts, complex shortcodes, heavy media, WooCommerce layer
2–3 weeks

These timelines cover content audit, export and cleanup, theme build, redirect deployment, QA, and go live. WordPress migration timelines are driven by content volume and cleanup work, how many shortcodes need stripping, how many embeds need checking, how much formatting needs fixing, not by SKU or order counts the way WooCommerce or Magento migrations are.

What Affects Migration Cost

Migration cost depends on five things, each scoped during the Phase 1 audit:

01

Post and page count

A 50 post blog with 10 static pages moves faster and costs less than a 500 post library with nested page structures. Content volume directly affects export time, cleanup work, and QA depth.

02

Media library size

WordPress sites with thousands of images, embedded PDFs, and downloadable files take more migration time for re-hosting, path checks, and CDN setup. Sites using WordPress's default /wp-content/uploads/year/month/ paths need every reference updated.

03

Shortcode and embed complexity

A site using standard WordPress blocks moves cleanly. A site built with Elementor, WPBakery, Divi, or heavy shortcode use needs manual content rebuilding — every shortcode rendered element has to be recreated in Shopify's section and block system.

04

WooCommerce scope

If your WordPress site also runs WooCommerce, product, order, and customer data adds a separate migration workstream with its own timeline and cost. See WooCommerce migration scope →

05

Theme complexity

A migration to a custom Shopify theme with unique layouts, custom sections, or multi region support takes longer than one using an optimised premium theme with small changes.

Sutrikaah was running on WordPress and needed a platform built for ecommerce scale. We moved the full site to Shopify, content, media, and SEO metadata, and built a storefront structured for ethnic wear browsing: collection pages split by fabric (silk, cotton, Banarasi), occasion, and price range, product pages with zoom ready images and size guides, and Klaviyo email automation (welcome, abandoned cart, post purchase) set up before launch. The migration kept the existing blog content and the SEO value it had built, while giving the brand a commerce native platform to grow on.

Ghaziabad, Delhi NCR · India + international clients

We have completed 40+ store migrations across fashion, jewellery, luxury, home decor, food, health, and ethnic wear, with a good share of them moving from WordPress. Each migration follows the same 4 phase process above, adjusted for WordPress specific content: shortcode cleanup, permalink mapping, media re-hosting, and the blog content checks WordPress migrations need. As an India based Shopify agency working out of Ghaziabad in Delhi NCR, we combine competitive project costs with direct timezone overlap for Indian D2C brands and flexible scheduling for international clients.

Built to Convert, Not Just Move Content

Most migration services hand you a Shopify store showing your old content on a new platform. We build a store meant to convert from day one. That means homepage layouts built for brand storytelling, product pages structured to score well for Meta and Google Ads, collection pages built for browse to buy conversion, and email automation (abandoned cart, welcome series, post purchase, win back) set up before launch, not pushed into a "phase 2" that never ships. Every WordPress migration includes an NDA signed before work starts, full code ownership handed to you at launch, direct Slack and WhatsApp access to your project manager, and 12 months of free post launch technical support at no extra cost.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Question not here? Ask us directly.

WhatsApp us
01Will my blog posts move to Shopify?

Yes. Every blog post moves with its title, body content, author, publish date, categories (as tags), featured image, and in body media. Formatting stays intact through a cleanup pass that strips WordPress shortcodes and standardises heading and list structures for Shopify's editor. A 300 post blog moves with the same care as a 30 post blog — the process scales, only the timeline changes.

02What happens to my WordPress permalinks?

Every WordPress URL is matched to its Shopify equivalent, and a 301 redirect is set up so existing backlinks, bookmarks, and search engine listings point to the right new page. Date based permalinks (/2024/01/post-slug/) redirect to Shopify's flat blog URL structure (/blogs/news/post-slug). Category archives redirect to Shopify tag pages or collections. Numeric URLs (/?p=123) are matched through a database lookup.

03Can you migrate my WooCommerce products too?

Yes. WooCommerce product, order, and customer data is a separate migration workstream with its own steps and data structures. We handle both as coordinated workstreams under one project.

04What about my WordPress plugins?

Plugin settings do not transfer, but their jobs get replicated. During Phase 1, we check every active plugin and map it to a Shopify equivalent — Yoast or Rank Math SEO to Shopify's native SEO fields, contact form plugins to Shopify Forms or a forms app, popup plugins to Shopify's native popups or an app like Privy, caching plugins to nothing (Shopify handles caching at the platform level). The full mapping is documented before migration starts.

05Will I lose my SEO rankings?

Not when the redirect setup is built correctly. We crawl every indexed URL on your WordPress site (not just the sitemap), build one to one redirect maps, check canonical tags, and submit the new sitemap to Google Search Console within the first hour of go live. Organic traffic is checked daily for 30 to 60 days. Small ranking changes of 5 to 15% are normal in the first 2 to 4 weeks and recover as Google processes the redirects.

06Can you handle a content heavy site with 500+ blog posts?

Yes. Content heavy WordPress sites are our most common migration type. A 500+ post site usually takes 2 to 3 weeks, covering content cleanup, shortcode removal, media re-hosting, and full redirect deployment. The timeline scales with content volume, but the process and quality checks stay the same.

07Is there downtime during migration?

No. The entire Shopify store is built and tested on a development setup while your WordPress site keeps running normally. The DNS switch happens during a low traffic window and usually finishes within 15 to 30 minutes. Visitors see no interruption.

08Do you offer WordPress to Shopify migration services in India?

Yes. We are based in Ghaziabad, Delhi NCR, and serve D2C brands across India as well as international clients. Indian brands get direct timezone overlap, competitive pricing, and the option for in person project discussions.
